Lighting For A New Home

You are excited about building your new home, the place of your dreams. There are so many options to choose from when working with the architect on a custom or working with the builder in a subdivision. One important aspect of your new is the lighting. Lighting can set the mood or tone for each room of a house or the theme of the entire house. You can select the individual light fixtures for each room plus even decide where light switches should be placed.

Designer Christopher Lowell achieved fame for stage lighting and has expanded his career to include lighting as well. Lowell has a web site where he explains the types of lighting that are appropriate for a home. The principles of good lighting need to be incorporated into a during the planning stages. According to Lowell, it is important to pay attention to the function of light in a room and to the effect the light creates rather than simply focus on light fixtures.

Light in a particular room can come from four categories of lighting: natural light, ceiling lights, up-lights, and mid-range lights. Natural light is the light that naturally enters the room through windows and skylights. Ceiling lights, of course, are the lights that are attached to the ceiling. Ceiling lights can be recessed

or hanging. Up-lights are a type of spotlight that is aimed upward and up-lights usually sit on the floor. Finally, mid-range lights are the lamps that light an area of the room.

Up-lights are typically placed in the corner of a room and the light can reflect off of two walls, creating a soft ambiance in an otherwise harsh corner. An excellent use of an up-light is to place one behind tall plants in a corner of a room.

Recessed ceiling lights are typically found in living rooms, dens, hallways and entry areas, in bedrooms and in the basement. Rooms with recessed lighting usually need some mid-range lighting as well. If you wish to use recessed lighting in your home, it is necessary to plan for it when the blueprints are being drawn.

The other kind of ceiling light hangs in either the middle of the room or a corner. A ceiling light rarely provides enough lighting to adequately brighten a room. Since most hanging lights are in a dining room, new plans usually automatically identify wiring to this area of the ceiling.

Natural lights can either improve a room's warmth or cause too much glare. Thinking about where you place a window in a room while the is being built can have a big impact on your enjoyment of a room. Helpful natural light can eliminate the need for excessive ceiling lighting or mid-range lights.

Lamps, or mid-range lighting, require electric outlets. New homes today provide more outlets per room than older homes. But it is still a good idea to check that there are enough outlets for lamps in each room, especially bedrooms.
